What Does Severe Shoulder Pain Indicate Despite Taking Motrin And Muscle Relaxers?

default
Posted on Wed, 4 Oct 2017
Question: I have had excrutiating pain radiating from my left shoulder down my arm. I went to urgent care Sunday because it is so intense. They said it was muscular and prescribed muscle relaxers and gave me a sheet with some exercises which I am doing faithfully. The pain has not lessoned. I am using icy hot, motrin and took the muscle relaxers every 8 hours yesterday (while not working). I also use ice packs. The pain is still there. My feeling is that is is nerve related, not muscle related. As a person who actively exercises, I have had muscle pain, but this is so much more intense.
Please advise.

Brief Answer:
Can be frozen shoulder.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Although it isn't possible to diagnose your condition without an examination and a few tests, your history is suggestive of Adhesive capsulitis(Frozen shoulder) or Calcific tendonitis. Proper diagnoses needs an MR scan and nerve conduction study.

These conditions are easily managed by regular physiotherapy ( Range of motion exercises, stretching and strengthening exercises). Over-the-counter pain relievers, and muscle relaxants can help reduce pain and inflammation associated with this condition.
I would suggest getting this evaluated by an orthopedician nearby for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. Your doctor after diagnosing the condition might refer to you a physical therapist. A physical therapist can teach you stretching exercises to help maintain as much mobility in your shoulder as possible.

I hope this answers your query.
