What Does My Ultrasound Scan Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 13 Sep 2017
Question: I was recently diagnosed with having a lesion on my left ovary, through an ultrasound. I have no symptoms, other than some old blood spotting in the recent weeks. I have a Mirena IUD, and thought that the IUD had shifted, as I haven't had a period in months (it was put in 2 years ago). I am 48, healthy, 5'5", 132 lbs. and have no history or ovarian or breast cancer in my family. My NP was concerned after the Ultrasound b/c she said the lesion "had thickens to the walls" and "blood flow". I am waiting for an MRI, but completely freaking out that I may have ovarian cancer.

Brief Answer:
Detailed MRI evaluation is required

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HealthcareMagic for your health

Ultrasound features of thick cyst walks and increased blood flow to the cyst is a little concerning for malignant ovarian tumor. However, these two features alone is not confirmatory. Many benign cyst/tumors of ovary can present with such characteristics. Many other factors like pappillary prjections, areas of solid areas on the cyst etc have to been considered before confirming the possibility of ovarian cancer.
If the ultrasound reveals inconclusive results,Then an MRI is indicated.MRI scan will provide much more details which can confirm whether or not the tumor is malignant. I see that you have normal CA 125 levles. But normal CA 125 levels alone does not rule out the possibility of malignant tumor.

Please give advised to follow up with your physician with the MRI results. I understand the situation you are going through is scary. But I would like to reassure you that with timely surgery and adjuvant treatments prognosis of ovarian cancer is excellent. Please seek help of your provider, family and friends to help you with the situation.

Hope I was able to help you
