What Does My Thyroidectomy Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Fri, 10 Nov 2017
Question: I had a complete thyroidectomy in July of this year and my surgeon/Doctor is still currently trying to find the right dosage of levothroxine to take. I noticed during last months increase in dosage that I had gotten a massive rash all over my entire body and face red raised spots that itched like crazy. I'm use to getting hives and rashes since I'm allergic to sulfa/sulfate. At the time of the break out I just took Benadryl to help with the rash. Well the other day my girlfriend asked me if I was doing okay ... I asked why and she said to me why is your skin including face now looks like an elderly ladies skin?? What has happened now is where my rash breakout areas were red spots were now brown spots. Large and small spots that look like liver spots or over the years sun spot skin damages. My skin looks aweful. I have tried everything to diminish the spots on my face. Makeup coverup only makes the spots look darker. What is going on with my body? I haven't called my doctor yet but wanted to do so research to see possibly why this is happening. Any advice/help would greatly be appreciated. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Diagnosis:Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HealthcareMagic for your health concern

The brown spots you are experienced is post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Sometimes,.when skin heals after inflammation (the allergic rash in your case) it can lead to increased melanocyte production in affected areas.
This hyperpimentation will eventually go away on its own. There are also treatments available to speed up the process.
-Always apply sunscreen when going out.
-Avoid forest strong sunlight exposure
- The only over the counter product available.is 4% Hydroquinone cream when applied to the dark spots will lighten the area. Please test the product on small hidden skin area like behind ears (for atleast 24 hours) to rule out possible allergic reaction.

Other treatment options like Isotretinoin cream, glycolic acid treatment and dermabrasion can be done under the guidance of a dermatologist. Please be advised to follow up with a dermatologist for necessary management.

Hope this answers your question
