What Does My Lipid Profile Test Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 18 Mar 2015
Question: I recently got my Lipid profile test done and below are the results:

Total Cholestrol: 260
Triglycerides: 219
HDL cholestrol: 45.40
LDL cholestrol: 167.09
VLDL cholestrol: 47.52
Chylomicrons: Nil
Cholestrol:HDL ratio: 5.73

This has almost been staying at the same levels since last 2 years. Please suggest me some quick remedies to reduce it and bring it to normal levels. I work in IT industry with sitting job most of the time and less physical activity. Consume Alcohol 1-2 times a month.

Please suggest me some medicines that can help to quickly bring them to normal levels.

Brief Answer:
Drugs AND Life style changes are needed

Detailed Answer:
Hi friend
Welcome to Health Care Magic

HDL is good cholesterol – higher, the better.
LDL is bad cholesterol – lower, the better. In the absence of any other risk factor 100 is ideal for LDL-C. In the presence of ischemia, 70 should be the aim.

Keep your weight to normal / even a little less
Quit smoking, if you are a smoker
Do regular EXERCISE – say walking or jogging - 30 minutes a day / at least 5 days in a week.      Healthy FOOD is a must. Avoid saturated fats – coconut oil, palm oil, butter, ghee, full cream milk...Avoid junk foods in particular – French fries have palm oil / Pizza has cheese / XXXXXXX sweets are made in ghee.../ Change to Poly-un-saturated oil – like sun flower oil. / Include Mono-un-saturated oil – Olive oil.

You do need drugs - in addition to diet and exercise - because your cholesterol level is rather high and it is also manufactured in the liver – and that is determined by heredity. THAT IS WHY MEDICINES HAVE TO BE TAKEN LIFE LONG

Statin is the first choice there are several of them – like Atorvastatin, Simvastatin, Rosuvastatin, Pitavastatin etc. Their doses will vary – for example atorvastatin is 10 to 80 mg
It may be combined with others like ezetimibe or fibrate

Your physician will give appropriate prescription and advice follow up
REPEAT THE TEST IN 2 TO 3 MONTHS.

There is no quick fix solution

Good luck
God bless you
