Brief Answer:
She has to be under supervision of her gynecologist

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. The fluid around the developing fetus in which it swims is called liquor amnii or amniotic fluid. In early pregnancy and mid the liquor is more in amount and through pregnancy it maintains a balance with the growing baby to provide protection and nutrition.

2. The normal amount of amniotic fluid is measured by calculating the AFI or amniotic fluid index. This is got by adding vertical fluid columns in the upper and lower quadrants of the uterus. The AFI has a range and it shows an average median value of 14.0 cm in the 28 week of pregnancy.

3. In the ultrasound report of your wife, the AFI is shown to be slightly less and measures 8.0 cms. This is called mild oligohydramnios. You have to be slightly cautious with the pregnancy from now onwards and follow up with her doctor regularly. There is a slight risk of problems to mother and baby in approximately 10 to 15 percent of cases.

4. Please do not get worried and discuss with her gynecologist in detail. Repeat ultrasound scan every month might be required at regular intervals to know the AFI and how the baby is growing. It is better to go to a hospital with NICU (neonatal intensive care) facilities for the delivery. This will ensure that the baby will get proper attention following deliver if required.

5. Mildly low AFI can happen for no particular reason or also might be seen in those with gestational diabetes, hypertension and preeclampsia. If your wife has any such condition then her gynecologist will make her aware about it.

6. Depending on her clinical examination, most women are able to continue doing light activity. It is important that you discuss this with her doctor and confirm because there are certain conditions which require the patient to be under strict health monitoring and avoid physical stress.

7. For food there is no particular restriction and she can continue taking foods that are fresh and cooked hygienically and easy to digest. Her total diet might contain 1800 kcal to 2000 kcal per day. Drinking adequate amounts of fluids and fresh juices is also suggested. Please tell her not to go out in hot weather and protect herself.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.
