Question: My last chest X-ray shoulded a widening of the mediastinum. They are sending me to a pulmonologist looking for a mass. Can you explain all of this stuff and what to expect.

Mediastinal widening may be due to many causes.
It may be due to enlarged lymph node,mass etc.
Mass may be benign or malignant reasons.
You may need contrast CT scan of thorax.It can assess its origin,extension,nature etc.
Contrast CT scan is very necessary for further management.
It is important to exclude mass due to your age.
FNAC may be needed depending upon findings.
Some patient may need MRI(thorax).
