What Does My Blood Test Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 1 Dec 2015
Question: I received a copy of my blood work and this was written...

"With hypoalbuminemia, anion gap correction is suggested using Na - (Cl+CO2) +
2.5*(4 - Albumin). The lab reports Na - (Cl+CO2)."

My anion gap was 6. I have slightly elevated lipase (96) and am on an anti viral currently for shingles. I am still experiencing pain in my left side and back. I am a 36 yr old female. Is the above concerning? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
your value is within normal range

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

Your value is fine. Though many labs initially report a range of 8 to 16, once it is less than 11 it is ok.
The newer reference range (normal range ) is 3 to 11, your value is within this range.

Some electrolytes in the body are positively charged (cations) and some negatively (anions).

The anion gap is the different between cations and anions.

The main cations looked at are sodium (Na) and potassium (k), though potassium is not always included.
The main anions are chloride (cl ) and bicarbonate (hco3). Albumin is also an anion and is included as well in some cases, because if it is low (hypoalbuminemia) and the low value is not taken into account ,the anion gap result may not be accurate.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
