Question: My Father has been diagnosed as Colo Rectal Cancer. We have undergone Oral Chemo and radiation for 6 weeks. Post 6 weeks of break, doctor asked us to go for MRI - Abdomen. Based on that we see tumor has reduced by 50 -60%.. Request to review sigmoidoscope report and tell us the feedback. Do we need to go for operation or not?

Brief Answer:
Operation required

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

Definitely there has been a good response to therapy. But operation is required, because it is the main curative treatment. Radiation and chemotherapy are adjunct treatments.

After surgery, he will need further chemo, intravenous/oral to prevent relapse.

Prognosis likely good, in view of good response so far.

Hope this helps.

What are the complications involved for the surgery considering the age of my father(75)? Do you recommend for a surgery? Is in not possible to get it cured via oral chemo and radiation one more time?

Brief Answer:
Not curative without surgery

Detailed Answer:
Radiation has been completed, there is no scope for further radiation. Chemo can be given but it is just for control, not cure. So surgery is must. Age alone is not a barrier and fit elderly patients do well with surgery.

Complications are difficult to predict but infections, poor wound healing, thrombosis, etc are possible. But there is no better alternative.
