default
Posted on Tue, 7 Feb 2017
Question: Hi Dr, My mum is 43 years old. She was complaining of picking kinda short headache since the last couple of months; Finally, we went to a neurologist. The neurologist suggested to go through EEG, MRI & CT scan to know the actual cause. We did the EEG its normal.

We have got the MRI reports and below are the impression.

Low lying cerebral tonsils- suggest LS spine screening to look for other abnormalities; Likely in keeping with Chari - Malformation - Type 1

S-shaped DNS

Bilateral maxillary sinuses mucosal thickening

no significant abnormality.

The neurosurgeon has suggested for decompression surgery; Can this be treated with medicine. Please share your opinion

Brief Answer:
Take treatment as advised and visit to a neurosurgeon in govt Institute

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
The headache doesn't seem to be related to findings found on Mri. XXXXXXX chairi malformations can be found asymptomatically also.
The requirement of surgery depends upon clinical presentation.
I will advise to consult a neurosurgeon in government Institute regarding need for surgery.
In private set up, the threshold for surgery is low.
For headache you can start her on amitryptiline 10 mg at bed time and increased gradually.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Do get back to me for further queries.
