Brief Answer:
Apptroved indications for GH treatment

Detailed Answer:
Dear Mr.XXXX,

Good day.
Noted your concern.
Let me tell you that a random measurement of growth hormone ( GH) has absolutely no relevance.

GH is a hormone which is secreted by pituitary gland in rapid pulsus and stays in blood very little time.

So a random low value has no meaning. I am sure that, it was requested by a non endocrinologist doctor. A more reliable screening test is IGF-1 which is a more stable and can be measured any time.

Once IGF-1 is low, we do a GH stimulation test to find out GH deficiency. Hence there is no value of a random GH test.

There are approved indications for GH treatment in adults. One of them is adult GH deficiency. The weight gain associated with adult GH deficiency will improve , fat mass reduce and muscle mass will increase on GH replacement. But this is in growth hormone deficiency.

Apart from that it is indicated in the treatment of weakness associated with kidney failure, certain cancers and AIDS. It is not recommended for body building and has so many side effects if it is used for other purposes than what I mentioned before. It is illegal to prescribe GH for non authorized indications.

To prove that you have GH deficiency, you need to do an IGF-1 test first. If that is low, you will need a GH stimulation test.

Binu
