What Does My ECG Test Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 5 Apr 2016
Question: I had a High-resolution, ECG synchronized Computed Tomography of the heart with attention of the coronary arteries using adone on my heart arteries using a Siemens Heartview CT. I and had a total score Coranary Calcification of 174.9 mg/cubic cm CaHA. The technician said my total was in the 49th percentile for my age, 72. Later, when my cardiologist was looking at the 174.9, he got out a calculator and said, "Your total calcium score is equivalent to a 77 yr old man." What???? 49th percentile for 72 yr olds . . . " . . equivalent to a 77 yr old"????? The test was done at my cardiologists facility.

Brief Answer:
Artery age is often more than person's age

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,

Your physician was right, your estimated arterial age is 77.
But you shouldn't panic. You should learn some information about calcium score.
High calcium score can be found in people aged above 70, even without any cardiovascular risk factors. In this people outcome is favorable if they follow healthy lifestyle.
If there are other risk factors, even in younger age with less calcium score, it is worse. In this case close follow-up and modification of risk factors should be done.

What I would advise you in your case:
1. evaluation of cardiovascular risk factors, if there is high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, they should be lowered. If you smoke, you should quite. If you are overweight, you should lose some weight and you should exercise regularly.
2. stress test should be done - if there is ischemia, then ischemic heart disease should be treated either medically or with angioplasty. If there is no ischemia, it means that high calcium score doesn't affect your heart blood supply, which is quite good. In this case only cardiovascular risk management should be done.

You shouldn't worry so much. If you have high calcium score more than predicted for your age, it doesn't mean that you are going to have a heart attack, it only means, that you should be more careful for other risk factors and follow healthy lifestyle.

Hope I could help you

Wishing you good health
