What Does My CT Scan Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 3 May 2017
Question: On March 11th I fell and hurt my wrist and it swelled up and hurt pretty bad. The next day it was better but still pretty sore. I went to the ER the 18th a week from the injury and they didn't see any fractures in the X-ray and sent me to an orthopedic. Well I saw the hand orthopedic on March 23rd and they did another X-ray and examined it and said it was not broke, Well I went back on April 4th and they saw something on the waist of the scaphoid that could be a fracture so they want me to get a CT scan next week and put me in a cast. An extended relative who is a radiologist looked at my X-ray and said it could be mildly displaced. So my questions are
1. If the fracture is mildly displaced will I need surgery to align it correctly or is mildly displaced capable of healing in a cast accurately. By looking at my X-rays what do you think?
2. If I do not need surgery is there anyway this could heal in 6 weeks with it being broken at the waist of the scaphoid? Or will it probably take 8-12 weeks or longer.
3. If I do need surgery how long does such procedure take to heal? I read that sometimes you need a screw and bone drafting. When is recommended that you need bone grafting done? Will I be able to use my wrist correctly with a screw in it within later years?
4. Are there any type of supplements or exercises to do to help the bone heal?
5. I have read that its hard for this bone to heal and it if it goes undiagnosed its even harder for it to heal. What are my chances of it healing correctly getting the cast 3.5 weeks after the injury. I wore a splint slightly periodically after the injury and at night sometimes before they confirmed it was fractured.

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
1. I have seen the X-ray attached. The displacement if any is very mild and is not likely to affect the fracture healing. it will heal well in a cast.
2. it will heal in 6-8 weeks.
3. Surgery will not be needed. Even if fixation is done the screw may need to be removed later. The healing will still take place in 6-8 weeks.
4. Rest is needed for healing. You can take a calcium and multivitamin supplement to enhance the speed of healing.
5. The displacement is very mild so the bone will heal even if proper rest was not provided. You need not worry.
I hope this answers your query.

Thanks a lot. A few more questions and I think that will be all.
1. Is normal exercise okay such as running?
2. Will a home stimulator help?
3. How long does it take for avascular necrosis to develop if it does? Is this something that could be happening now or does it normally take awhile? I injured my wrist 4 weeks ago and got it casted 4 days ago.
4. They recasted my wrist because the one side of it was hurting and I noticed the position of my wrist and hand is different than the other cast. It's as if my hand and fingers is slight turned and facing the left in an angle compared to my arm, just very slightly. My thumb is pretty much parallel and lined up with my forear and my index finger can not go down all the way if I try to put my fingers down on the cast towards my palm as the thumb is in the way. Is the position of the casting an important role in healing or just immobilization? Sorry to seem paranoid but I want to heal properly.

That should be all.
Thanks

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
1. You can run as far as it does not affect the wrist.
2. Home stimulator can increase the displacement. it is best to avoid it.
3. Avascular necrosis is a slow process. Can take 6 months for diagnosis and to develop gradually.
4. Cast is put only for immobilization. it is put with hand in a glass holding position to minimize the discomfort and any movement of the fractured fragment. The position of the hand in cast that you have explained seems to be correct .
Hope my answer is helpful.

Thanks so much! When I typed home stimulator I actually meant bone stimulator. So I should not use a bone stimulator?
