The Hemoglobin is quite low ( 8.4) , the normal being atleast 12 g/dl. the Hematocrit is also low.
You have a microcytic anemia.
you may send the MCH value to determine if its hypochromic, normo or hyper chromic

The next step must be to determine if its a production problem or a destruction issue of the RBC . Please get a Reticulocyte count/Corrected reticulocyte index done to determine that.

Iron and Iron Binding Capacity ,Ferritin should be done. There is no point in taking Iron pills without determining if a deficiency exists or not. Peripheral smear to see for fragmented cells should also be done in addition.


Blood loss should also be looked for eg Abnormal heavy bleeding or excessive blood loss in menses, Gastrointestinal Blood loss, a stool for occult blood must be done ,too.

So, to answer your question , the problem is serious and you need workup for your anemia.

the causes include Iron deficiency, Chronic disease,Thalassemia , Sideroblastic anemia , Lead toxicity.

Get the Reticulocyte count and Peripheral smear done in consultation with your doctor

If the Peripheral smear is normal then Iron studies should be done,
If the Peripheral smear is abnormal then the workup will be based on smear characteristics and a bone marrow biopsy may be needed
