What Does "hypoechoic Lesion Containing Interal Echoes" Mean In An Ultrasound?

default
Posted on Fri, 30 May 2014
Question: I had an ultrasound of my right Kidney that showed a hypoechoic lesion containing interal echoes measuring 2.2 x1.7x1.9. My doctor had my go get a CT scan with contrast. I just received the results this indicates there is a hypodense lesion within the midpole of the right kidney which measures fluid density on all sequences suggesting a renal cyst. I was also sent for a blood test. My BUN and Creatinine Serum were measured. All normal with the exception of the Creatinine level which was low at .43. Incidentally I had a CT scan for another reason 5 years ago in 2009 and this lesion was identified then but was only 14mm at that time. I will not see my doctor for another week and I am curious to know if this has potential for being cancerous. Any thoughtss?

Brief Answer:
it looks benign

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing to HealthcareMagic.

The cyst in your kidney, as per the ct scan findings appears to be benign to me.

The rate of growth is also slow and as per ct findings, there are as such no findings to suggest malignancy.

I would suggest that you don't worry about malignancy and show it to your doctor at the scheduled appointment to discuss the plan of action.

I usually suggest aspiration of the cyst under usg or ct guidance for my patients who have similar presentation.

Hope i have been helpful.

Regards
Dr. Ashish Verma
