Posted on Wed, 2 Jul 2014
Question: I have an employee that was admitted for heart issues. The doctors claim his heart is functioning at 10-15 percent. What does this mean? He had open heart surgery about 6 years ago. What is the treatment /prognosis?

Brief Answer:
Not promising

Detailed Answer:
Dear friend,
Welcome to Health Care Magic

Sorry to say that the prognosis is generally bad in such situations…
Apart from ejection fraction (very low here), it is difficult to assess life expectancy - it depends upon the cause / valves’ integrity and function / wall of the chambers / arrhythmia, their nature and frequency / renal function / response to medicines .
Further deterioration can be prevented or postponed by aggressive management.
If there is further deterioration, heart transplantation may be the only consideration...
The treating doctor alone can suggest further based on his assessment of the situation.

Take care
Good luck

Brief Answer:
causes & consequences...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Rather difficult to elaborate from this description… / we need exact terminology for appropriate comments...
I presume they may mean…

Ablation?
A procedure done by a subspecialty of cardiology / abnormal nerves (conduction system) in the heart are searched and knocked off / to prevent abnormal rhythms that cause deterioration of the failure

Pericardial effusion?
Fluid collecting around the heart / may compress and compromise the function (tamponade)
Consequence or additional burden from the original cause
Pleural effusion?
Fluid around the lungs / generally a part of heart failure / aspirated at times –to confirm the nature, especially to exclude bleeding or infection

All of these are usually ominous…
God bless him
I greatly appreciate your empathy

Regards
