What Does Fasting Blood Sugar Level Of 7.3 Mmol/L Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 30 Jul 2015
Question: This morning before eating or taking a drink I took a blood sugar reading - it read 7.3 mmol. Is this normal? I have symptoms of numbness under my feet and feeling very weak at times - especially below the knees. Could you please advise?

Brief Answer:
Further steps to diagnose if you have diabetes- suggested

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for using HCM,

The value you have measured is morning, is a value that we consider borderline low diabetes. Even though, we can not tell that for sure, because you have to measure the blood sugar from vein's blood, because the capillary blood (the one in the finger) always shows slightly higher.

So, If I was your caring doctor, I would recommend to do some blood labs:
Fasting blood sugar
Blood sugar 2 hours after a meal
HbA1C (which will tell how was the level of your blood sugar the last 3 months).

Those 3 will determine how you would need to be treated.
You may as well start being careful with your diet, because sometimes the first 3 months losing weight, may help to keep the blood sugar under control.

The feet problem, may or may not be related with diabetes. It will need a good examination and history to determine that.

Hope this is helpful.
Let me know if you have further questions.

Take care,
Dr. Papaqako
