What Does Excessive Vomiting By A Child Suggest?

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Sep 2015
Question: My granddaughter (2 1/2 months old, 13 lbs.) vomited a great deal (at least twice the usual spit up amount) this morning, and the color of the vomit was very yellow. She has no fever, is eating as usual, and does not seem to feel bad or be in pain. She only has had breast milk as she has not yet started solid food. What could account for the copious vomit and the very odd color?

Brief Answer:
Do not worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to the HCM

I have gone through your question and understand your concerns completely. Don't worry. Babies are prone to occasional episodes of vomiting. The reasons may vary from mild indigestion, transient lower oesophageal relaxations, over full tummy, etc.

If the vomiting episodes are not associated with the following, there is no need for any medication:
1. Fever, lethargy, poor appetite
2. Excessive crying spells
3. Greenish ( bile stained) or blood tinged vomitus.

The amount may be large even in some normal episodes. Also, yellow colour which you mentioned is due to gastric juices which mix with ingested milk while digestion. Since your baby is otherwise asymptomatic, I would not recommend any treatment at present.

In case, vomiting episodes recur then you may give Domperidone drops for relief.

Hopefully this will help you. I would be happy to help you in any further questions.

Take care
