What Does Dark Green Stool With Blood Indicate?
Question: My 13 yr old granddaughter has had stool sample, dark green with blood; ultrasound, HISD, showing spots and burning with the endiscopy, and for 3 wks home from school with bad stomachs and headaches, Dr sent off samples from endoscopy for biopsies...any suggestions?

I read your question and i understand your concern. Dark greenish stools with blood could be many factors from mere diet related to many other causes like infections or medications etc.
I wish you would have shared the endoscopy findings in more detail with us. Lets hope for the biopsy results and see what comes up. Spots with blood in urine may indicate towards some GI epithelial disorder and god forbid malignancy even or some familial GI disorders but its too early to comment on that now.
Remember most common causes of such presentation in children are mostly infections and that too viral.
Following causes can result in green stol though.
Diet high in green vegetables such as spinach
Food dyes
Severe diarrhea
Not finishing nursing entirely on one side, thus missing some of high-fat content breast milk, which affects the digestion of the milk
Protein hydrolysate formula (for babies with milk or soy allergy)
Lack of normal intestinal bacteria in breast-fed infants
Indomethacin — a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug
Iron supplements
Medroxyprogesterone (Depo-Provera), a contraceptive drug
