default
Posted on Fri, 13 Jun 2014
Question: I have been experiencing muscle/ligament/tendon weakness and wasting. I have been on 75 mcg of synthroid. My last thyroid readings were:

APRIL 28
TSH 0.51
Free T4 22
Free T3 3.3

MAY 14
TSH 1.01 (no information on T4 and T3)
Thyroid peroxidase 370

My questions are:
A- What does the abnormally high thyroid peroxidase reading signifiy?
B- Based on this what other steps / tests would you recommend?

Kind Regards

Brief Answer:
See Rheumatologist/Immunologist

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

At present it is evident that you were diagnosed with Hypothyroid and on regular thyroxine supplements. The muscle weakness and wasting may or may not be related to thyroid.

It also looks like you have required thyroxine for normal function of body.

1) Your abnormal elevated Thyroid peroxidase means that there is autoimmune activity in the body. That means the normal body cells are being falsely recognized and your body is trying to fight them.
2) I suggest you to see an Rheumatologist for the muscle wasting and tiredness.

Hope this helps.
