Posted on Tue, 1 Apr 2014
Question: Hi! Recently I have developed a small (less than pea sized) very red bump right next to my clitoris. It is painful when touched, bleeds lightly on occasion, and stings very sharply when I urinate. I am 20 and not sexually active. Thank you!

Brief Answer: Folliculitis- Do not touch, pinch, pop or squeeze Detailed Answer: Hello, Welcome and thanks for posting your query to the forum. I can understand your concern for the bump near clitoral region. It is sometimes really distressing for anyone to have anything unusual over genital region. After reading your brief query I can make out the possibility of Folliculitis. It is an inflammation or infection of the hair root with oil gland at the genital area. As we know that our genital area have lot of fine and coarse hair and this area is always been closed, so there is always a chance of infection of hair root at this area. It can further be aggravated by heat and humidity with sweating over this area. It is generally painful to begin with or have a feeling of discomfort. It generally begins as reddish dot and then can enlarge later on to form a cyst kind of lesion if remained for longer time. There may be blackish to brownish scab kind of thing present during healing phase. It is not related to any type of sexually transmitted infections. For the confirmation of the above condition and suggestion of treatment it would be better if you can upload a close picture of the area. For that you have a feature to upload images by yourself at the right side of the query page. Or else, you can send as an attachment to YYYY@YYYY with the subject as "Attn: Dr. Sanjay Kumar Kanodia. Also let me know since exactly how many days you developed the condition. Otherwise also there are certain suggestions which are applicable in the condition: - The most important thing you should do is to not touch, pinch, pop or squeeze the area by any means. -Stay away from hot and humid climate. -Take two times bath and maintain good hygiene. -Wear cotton clothes and cotton undergarments and especially change the undergarments two times a day - You can do cold or warm water compresses over the affected area. If I were your dermatologist then would have suggested you to apply topical antibiotic containing Fucidin or “Mupirocin” cream in a very thin layer two times a day or preferably night time. I hope these informations will help you. If you have further queries I will be happy to help. Thank you so much for your reply. I have emailed you a picture to the address you specified. You will see the red enlarged area by my clitoris in the left side of the photo. I have had this condition for over a month. I assumed it was just a small scrape or irritation that would quickly clear up but it has not--the area has gotten larger and more irritated. Any clarification you can give would be so appreciated. Thank you!

Brief Answer: "Bartholin cyst" due to inflammation Detailed Answer: Hell young lady, Thanks a lot for sending the important details and most importantly the picture. After analyzing the complete condition and reviewing the picture I cna make out that presently there is a formation of cyst at teh clitoral site. It can be due to long standing folliculitis or due to inflammation of Bartholin's gland (specific glands at clitoral and vaginal area) which is known as "Bartholin cyst". This is quite common to find such kind of situation in females and is quite simple and treatable condition. As the condition is from last one month and is deeply red and inflamed causing lot of pain, so it would be better to meet a gynecologist at the earliest possible. The cyst is quite red and inflamed so you need to have following further suggestions till you meet a gynecologist: - You should do warm water compresses to reduce any discomfort and for soothing. Do not try to do hot water compress as can lead to more pain. Take a towel soaked in warm water and compress the area by the same for five minutes. You can do this for 3-4 times. - I would have suggested to take oral painkillers such as paracetamol or diclofenac or ibuprofen round the clock (for 2-3 times ) to reduce the intensity of the pain. - A course of good oral antibiotic under medical advice can be taken for 5-7 days under gynecological supervision. Rest of the suggestions are as previously. You will be alright soon. I hope these informations will help you. If you have further queries I will be happy to help or if not then can close the query and rate the answer.
