What Does A Purple Ring Around The Anus Of A Child Indicate?

Question: My son is 6 and has a purple ring around his anus and says it hurts. I do not see anything coming out of his is anus, it's just the area around his butt that is diacolored and sore. Do I use hydrocortisone cream or preparation h to help the pain?

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. The first thing that I would need to ask is whether your son has constipation. Constipation could be the possible cause of the mentioned problem. If that is the case, taking plenty of green leafy vegetables as well as fiber supplements like psyllium husk (isabgol) would help in relieving the constipation.

I would not insist you to apply hydrocortisone topically. Rather Sitz bath should provide relief. He has to take water as hot as skin can take, take it in a tumbler and sit on it with his anal opening dipped. This has to be done for about 20 mins a couple of times a day. Creams like Annovate or Sucral Ano can be used.

He hasn't been constipated. His most recent bowel movement was last night.
