default
Posted on Wed, 30 Apr 2014
Question: Thank you, you kindly answered my query re lump under armpit and burping. The armpit pain was relieved by burping. However, the lump is a lymph gland. I have had a mammogram and breast exam, both NAD. What would be the cause of the swollen gland? I do not have any infection. Thankyou, Merryn

Brief Answer: A biopsy is recommended for a confirmed diagnosis. Detailed Answer: Hi XXXX ! Good morning. I am Dr Shareef answering your query. Any lymph gland persisting for a long duration specially under the arm pit and not responding to short conservative management like a short course of antibiotics and anti inflammatory drug has to be worked up and investigated into. If I were your doctor, I would do a general clinical examination of yours along with some routine investigations like routine blood tests (CBC, peripheral smear for any abnormal cells, ESR), blood sugar, and possibly an X ray chest if need be before referring you to a general surgeon either for a FNAC or an excisional biopsy depending on the situation as judged by him. Further management would depend on the report of the biopsy. I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts. Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
