What Do White Particles In Ear Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 29 Oct 2014
Question: My doctor put some drops in the ear and flushed it to remove what she thought was wax. But nothing came out but she still sees some kind of white stuff in a circle. She is referring me to an ENT specialist. But in the mean time I am wondering what it could be. I have no pain in my ear.

Brief Answer:
T'sclerosis/Saprophytic Fungus/Otomycosis/FB/Perf

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. If there is no ear wax, then the white stuff in a circle can be any of the following:
a. Tympanosclerosis (T'sclerosis: a chalky white deposit which is commonly seen in cases of middle ear ventilation problems. Requires no treatment.)
b. Saprophytic fungus (again, requires no treatment).
c. Otomycosis (a fungal infection such as Candida. Treated with anti-fungal medication. Will cause itching and an ear infection).
d. A foreign body (FB: such as cotton. easily removed).
e. A healed perforation (Perf) or a scarred eardrum which is very common. Requires no treatment).

2. An ear drum examination by an ENT Specialist will easily settle the issue.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any follow up queries, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
