What Do These Premium Lens Numbers Indicate?
Question: I just had a question regarding cataract surgery. My brother just had surgery with premium lens implant. Second surgery scheduled. He has Down syndrome and I am just trying to understand how bad his vision was prior and what the premium lens numbers mean. It is a Alcon Acery Sof iq Toric Astigmatism IOL. We have no guarantee that he will not need glasses after. But he has always been difficult to fit for normal glasses. Is this prescription really strong?

Acry sof iq intraocular lens is multifocal intraocular lens and all multifocal intraocular lenses will correct both distance and near vision and thus glasses for near vision are not usually required after cataract surgery as with other types of intraocular lenses.
The normally required intraocular lens power will be in the range of 20-24 dioptres. In your brother's case the intraocular lens power is 32 dioptres with 6 dioptres of astigmatism and this power indicates high hypermetropia which is usually seen in Downs syndrome.
This prescription is on the higher side but no need to be worried since you have opted for once of the best intraoculr lenses with correction for toric astigmtism, I hope he will be fine after cataract surgery.
