What Do These Following Blood Reports Indicate?

Posted on Thu, 16 Jun 2016
Question: I have just received my. 3 month lab reports. My CBC and CompMetabolic panel were all normal except, my Creatinine was 1.36 and my GFR was 52. BUN was normal at 12. My Creatinine was 1.30 and 1.34 the last two times. I do not think I have a dehydration problem, but I do work out with weights and have good muscle mass. Please advise.

Brief Answer:
muscle mass can cause an increase as can diet

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The normal range for creatinine can vary slightly from one lab to the next. In some labs the normal upper limit is 1.5 approximately, in others it may be 1.2.

The slight differences in the reported values (1.36,1.30 and 1.34) would not be considered statistically significant. These readings would essentially be considered to be approximately the same since the difference is up to 0.06.

If the BUN is normal then , as you mentioned , dehydration is unlikely because this would be elevated in dehydration as well.

Increased muscle mass and a high intake of protein can both increase creatinine.
This means it is possible that this is affecting your creatinine levels.

The GFR is slightly decreased at 52. This means that there is slight impairment of kidney function but it is not likely significant since the BUN is normal (this also goes up in kidney disease).

Summary: (a) slight increase maybe due to muscle mass, if you use a high protein diet this would also have an effect

(b)there is slight impaired kidney function since GFR less than 60 but not likely significant since BUN normal

(c) controlling risk factors would prevent further change- control of blood pressure and blood sugar if these are problems for you

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

Dr XXXXXXX thanks for your explanation. My blood pressure is usually around 118 over 65. My glucose was 94 and is usually under 100. My Hemoglobin is normal. I have limited my meat intake, but not my exercise regiment. Should I take a supplement or just keep monitoring the levels, which I do at least 3 times a year?

Brief Answer:
very good readings

Detailed Answer:
HI

Good BP and blood sugar readings. These normal values would reduce the chance of any further deterioration.

You should continue exercising, exercise is good, balance aerobic with strength training

You can take a general supplement at this point and continue monitoring

Please feel free to ask anything else
