What Do These Following Blood And Ultrasound Reports Indicate?

Posted on Tue, 21 Jun 2016
Question: Hi, I am 33 years old. I have recently gone for USG and kidney profile blood test. Creatinine is 0.9 and all other results are normal. My father had pkd and died at the age of 50. What are the chances for me to get old. And how long I can service. And usg is enough to determine pkd? For the last 5 years I am getting lower back and rib pain. It goes off for some time and comes again. Doctor said no cysts as of now. What could be the reason for pain? Creatinine was 1.1 one year back. And was 1 some time back and now it is .9. 1.1 is a worrying range?

Brief Answer:
You are normal

Detailed Answer:

Hi, XXXXXXX

If you are 33 and your kidney ultrasound is reported as normal (i.e. there are no cysts at all) then I can say that you do not have to worry , you are not likely to get the disease ever. so stop worrying.

what you can do is repeat your ultrasound after one year and check BP every once a year. Nothing more needs to be done. Low back pain has various causes including vit-D deficiency, osteoporosis, muscular strain and also kidney disease. Though you don't have polycystic kidney disease you can still test for urine routine and urine protein /creatinine ratio to rule out any other kidney disease.
also you can get Blood Vit -D levels to rule out deficiency.

Best wishes

Hi,
Thanks for the response.
My blood and urine tests are normal every time.
D vitamin is at just normal range. I heard like parents and children will get pkd at the same age. Is it crct? I don't know when my father git to know it frst.
If a person is at last stage at 49 years at what age probably pkd occurs? Can u clearify this?

Brief Answer:
You are normal

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
If a person suffers from polycystic kidney disease, cysts should start appearing before 30 year of age . If there are no cysts till now you are not likely to have the disease.

your father would also have started having kidney cysts before the age of thirty, but because he was ok and no tests were done at that age, his disease came to light only when he started having problems.

there is only 50% chance of transmission of the disease to children.

Best wishes.

Hi,
My brother is 37 and he also free from cysts till now. So both the children out of risk of which a parent was a pkd sufferer. Is it possible? will it happen like that?
You are saying that pkd generally occurs by 30. Then why should i go for usg every year when i crossed 32 and no cysts found till now?
Creatinine levels going up and down from 1.1 to .9 is normal? or should i go for MRI?

Brief Answer:
It is possible

Detailed Answer:
Hi, Yes it is possible. It is possible that father has the disease and none of the kids have it. because there is only 50 % chance of the disease.

You should get a repeat ultrasound because ultrasound is an operated dependent test and can miss small cyst . while a CT or MRI are more specific and can pick up smaller cysts.

All this is based on the assumption that your father has autosomal dominant kidney disease there are so.many other cystic diseases of the kidneys..

Best wishes.

Hi ,
I have attached reports of recent US scan of mine.
Please check the kidney result and let me know if they are cyst free or not.
As there is no mentioning of cysts yes or no in the report.
also please let me know what does it mean by "Corticomedullary junction is made out."
