Posted on Fri, 26 Sep 2014
Question: Hi I just got a test back from my hormones doctor telling me I have pre diabetes which is blowing my mind. I a few weeks ago was in the hospital and they tested my blood sugar and said it was fine. Now my dr. tells me I am pre diabetic it came back at 5.7 some test he did. Before he did this test I was suppose to fast I know that I had a coffee (maybe even with sugar I am not sure) could that mess with the test. And what kind of dr. should I see for this. Should I get tested again? I am quite nervous.

Brief Answer:
Please, get tested again!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this diagnosis of prediabetes. Honestly, 5.7 is just above 5.5 which is considered normal. Because you took coffee in the morning, the results are completely messed and cannot be interpreted as if you were in a fasting state. Considering this as a random blood sugar, you are doing just very okay.

There is no need to get nervous about this right now. Having had a normal values a few weeks back, not respecting the fasting and a value of 5.7, you are most likely doing good. I will like you to observe a fast and get the test repeated. Report this value to me and should it still be concerning, then we shall kick start the process of what prediabetes is, who to see and what to do.

In all, you messed up the test procedure and the results cannot be interpreted as such. Get the test repeated and we would get on from there. Prediabetes is a warning and not a full blown disease condition.

II hope this helps. I wish you well. Thank you so much for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

Thanks so much for the follow up it runs in my family that is why I was so nervous it is a horrible disease. Do you really think the test was messed up from the coffee I might have used sweet and low or sugar would that matter? Thanks so much and I will let you know I will go get another test.

Brief Answer:
Coffee messed the test up!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for this follow up.

Get the control test and keep me posted. Please, observe the fasting as prescribed.

With diabetes that runs in the family, avoiding modifiable risk factors like sedentary lifestyle, excess weight, no physical exercises, etc should be greatly discouraged.

I hope this helps. Keep e posted and updated.

I just read online that you really don't have to fast for this test A1C I am hoping it was off I am going to get another test. They said it is very rarely off. They said that you fast for other glucose levels. So I am going with what you told me and retesting something to me does not seem right. Thanks again.

Brief Answer:
Please, was this A1c or fasting blood sugar?

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

If this is A1c, then fasting has no role here. I have been referring to fasting blood sugars. There is no point in controlling for this test right away.

My advise would be to repeat this test in three months. From there, we shall have an idea if this is still that concerning. As I mentioned before, this value is not alarming.

Stay calm. Get a control in 3months and let us pick up from there. If you really want a control right away, go ahead and let me know but, this would not be of very much added value unless grossly abnormal.

I hope this helps. I wish you well and feel free to keep the discussion going if need be.
