What Do Rashes In Groin Area Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 11 Dec 2014
Question: I have sores on my groin and when i went to my dr he diagnosed folliculitus and presribed antibiotics for 2 weeks. I expressed my worry that it could be herpes but he told me why he didnt think it was. The original sores never really went away even after two months. Just as they started to fade a new batch popped up with more sores that also went up my stomach a little. Again, im still worried its herpes

Brief Answer:
Not herpes; looks like folliculitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic

I have gone through your query and I have also seen the photographs.

After going through the photographs I am of the view that it is most likely Folliculitis. Bacterial folliculitis can recur

I rule out herpes because the lesions are widespread (bilateral) which is unusual for herpes. In herpes the lesions are grouped, discrete, vesicles or erosions which are limited to a area and not so widespread

Kindly let me know more about your query.
-Are the lesions painful? Do you have other symptoms like genital itching? If yes, is the itching/scratching more at night?
-Which antibiotic was prescribed last time?
-Also tell me about your sexual history? Are you sexually active? single or multiple sexual partners? When was your last sexual contact?

Regards

They arent particularly painful just occasionly uncomfortable with slight pain if i walk all day irritating it. Again, they definitely itch but its occasional and very mild. It was 500mg amoxicillin i believe.

Brief Answer:
Treat empirically for scabies; oral+topical antibiotic

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

A course of an oral antibiotic is advisable for a week; my choice would be Cephalexin (Keflex).
Topically you may use an OTC antibacterial e.g either 2% Mupirocin Or Neosporin ointment.
I would like to treat you empirically for scabies. Single whole body application of 5% Permethrin lotion, kept overnight for 8 hours, followed by scrub bath next day; alternatively a single dose of Ivermectol 12 mg can also be given.

Also i wasnt ablr to answer your sexual activity question. I didnt realize i could only send one message.

Sexually active, in a relationship for 5 months. Before i was active with 2 partners

Scabies seems to explain a lot brcause i do have problems with persistent itchy skin in other parts of my body including elbows, ankles, back of neck and legs.

Brief Answer:
Scabies is a possibility

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Thank you for clarification. Itching in other body sites definitely strengthens my earlier possibility of scabies.
Kindly refer to my previous reply with respect to treatment of scabies i.e Single whole body application of 5% Permethrin lotion, kept overnight for 8 hours, followed by scrub bath next day; alternatively a single oral dose of Ivermectol can also be given.
These are prescription medicines, I would suggest that you visit a dermatologist for a confirmatory diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Brief Answer:
Scabies is very likely

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Yes, the pictures are very indicative of scabies.
Repeated scratching also probably being the cause for recurrent bacterial infection in the groins.
You may add an OTC oral antihistamine e.g cetrizine 10 mg once daily as well. This will provide you symptomatic relief from itching.
