Question: SIR,
My mother (age: 46) has pain in his right thumb joint since 3-4 years and gap is formed in the joint , and recently started in left thumb joint also.........along with pain in lower back and secretion in eye
she has cervical problem also
We have consulted many orthopedician since then .........they usually precribed surgery or continue with pain killer.......with no proper diagnosis.... as blood report came out normal with negative RA factor...all other Hb , TLC , DLC came out normal
Recently my mother stated taking "HOMEOPATHY TREATMENT" , but felt little difference in pain......so homeopathy doc. prescribed some test.......so i am citing the test results along with the attached pdf file.........

ESR 15 mm/hr
URIC ACID,SERUM 4.58 mg/dL
C-REACTIVE PROTEIN , CRP, SERUM <3.0 mg/dL
RHEUMATOID FACTOR (RA) , SERUM <10.0 IU/mL
VITAMIN D, 25- HYDROXY, SERUM 16.34 nmol/L
VITAMIN B-12 172 pg/mL

So my query is please comment on this report .....what does it mean in layman language about each test results , What abt RA factor result ??
Which treatment should we follow ??

Brief Answer:
Thumb osteoarthritis

Detailed Answer:
Good evening

Thank you for writing on health care magic

I have gone through your history and the blood reports.

1. She does not have rheumatoid arthritis as the tests for arthritis( RA factor) is negative and the inflammatory markers( ESR, CRP) are negative. So that is one way a good part that she doesnt need strong medications

2. Her Vitamin D levels are very very low. It is hardly any amount in the body. So I would suggest you start her on Tablet Uprise D 3 60 K once a week for 12 weeks and continue it once a month daily

3. For the thumb, it looks more of osteoarthritis. Little bit of age factor plus the overuse plus not doing it in proper postures have let to degeneration. For management, surgery is the last resort. One way you can resort to is intra articular injection if the pain is 2 much and use Thumb Splints on working. More she will keep working, more it gets eroded due to friction. But for now intra articular injection( injection into the thumb joint) is the best way out.

HOpe the information was useful

today we visited homeopathy doctor.....he reviewed mother's report AND said that.....she is on verge of getting RA........and she has problems all over his body.........
so my query is
1. Is my mother really on verge of getting RA......???? Wat is her present situation based on reports......mainly about RA....she is close or out of danger area ??? Please comment on RA and ESR results ..

2. In case of thumb osteoarthritis .. Can it be cured by medicine completely???
Is it arithiritis or similar to it???? Does it spread to other joints also ??????

3. Wat is success rate of surgery????? Can we opt for it now.. as she is otherwise healthy presently ????

Brief Answer:
Osteoarthritis of the thumb joint

Detailed Answer:
Good evening

Sorry for the late reply. Was occupied with family and work

As per your queries:

1. From your history, it doesnt look like Rheumatoid ARthritis. Her ESR is totally normal, and so is her rheumatoid factor and CRP which goes against any inflammation going on in the body. The joint involvement you have told is not seen in rheumatoid arthritis. It does not involve the lower back and there are no other joints except the right thumb.

All though examination is superior, I still dont feel she is getting RA.

2. Thumb Osteoarthritis cant be cured fully once squaring happens. It is like a destructive process, which can only be managed but cant be cured medically. One has to avoid further degeneration of it. Yes, it can involve the other joints especially the knees, joints towards the ends of the finger. Knees are the ones which can be debilitating but the finger joints osteoarthritis doesnt damage the joint, only causes pain and outgrowths.

3. I wont recommend surgery at her stage. Success rate is good but then again it is not the usual joint which is used to be. SO I would suggest go for intra articular, physiotheraphy, thumb splint and see if it improves. If it doesnt then you can consult a surgeon

PS: Dont go for homeopathy medications or strong painkillers. No good can come out of it

Hope the information was useful
