What Do My Lab Test Reports Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Sep 2015
Question: I had an abnormal ultrasound of my liver. There were two masses. One is believed to be a hemangioma. The second they also thought might be a hemangioma but was bigger (4cm) and atypical in shape for a hemangioma. They sent me for a MRI. My results came in: •793.99 Abnormal findings on radiological or other exams of body structure, NEC.
What would this mean?

Brief Answer:
No specific diagnosis is made and awaiting MRI results

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. The ICD 9 system is used for disease classification. In this method 793.99 means "Other nonspecific (abnormal) findings on radiological and other examinations of body structure". NEC is not elsewhere classifiable. This is a way to indicate that there is some condition which has surfaced after doing the ultrasound scan and the confirmatory diagnosis is still pending and probably will be arrived at after the MRI results are discussed.

2. In the above context, the diagnosis is still not completely confirmed. Probably the MRI scan result might require discussion and if needed then it might be followed up with a pathological procedure to confirm the diagnosis.

3. You might request a copy of the MRI scan report to know the imaging possibilities of the liver masses.

Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
