Question: Good afternoon,
I was recently treated for a UTI with nitrofurantoin, 2 pills a day for 5 days. I had a urine culture taken today, and everything was negative, but what concerns me was my blood-UA was a +1. my WBC was +2, and there was a trace of squamous cells. Does this mean I have cancer?

Brief Answer:
Normal urine analysis report, not suggestive of cancer...

Detailed Answer:
Hi my dear,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concern.

I am happy to hear that nitrofurantoin succeeded in treating UTI.

With regards to the recent lab test you did, I can assure that the report of urine analysis is not suggestive of cancer at all.

The presence of blood cells (+1) , white blood cells (+2) are within normal range. If they were increased, that is suggestive of UTI

With regards to squamous cells, they are present during co-infection of UTI with genital infection.
Detecting the trace presence of squamous cells is normal in a normal urine analysis. If they were increased, could discuss about infection or other pathologies.

Although no UTI was noted this time, I always recommend my patients to:
- keep drinking lots of water
- take urine antiseptic like cranberry, uva Ursi, etc.

All the best.
