Question: Hello Dr.,

I am experiencing loss of hearing in my right ear. Everything is a muffled sound in my right ear and I also have developed a ringing sound in it as well. It came on sudden after I was at the gym. As I was walking out of the gym, I took my ear buds out from listening to music and all of sudden my ear was muffled and a ringing started. Any suggestions of what it could be and what to do.

Brief Answer:
It would be best to be assessed as soon as possible.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

It would be best to be seen by your doctor because currently the guidelines indicate that sudden hearing loss should be assessed as soon as possible.

Though persons can recover some or all of their hearing and it is very possible that your hearing would improve significantly, you should be seen.

Causes:
(1) In the vast majority, the cause is not found
(2) Infection - viral or bacterial infection
(3) Vascular- a problem with the blood supply to the ear
(4) Mass- the presence of a mass affecting the ear
(5) Trauma to the bones or one of the other structures of the ear
(6) Toxins- there are medications such as a type of antibiotic, that can affect the ear

In addition to formal assessment of your hearing, your doctor may also do blood tests to see if a cause can be found. Treatment would depend on the cause, if found. As mentioned, hearing improves in many persons but it is best to be seen.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions.

Regards
