What Could Cause Severe Pain At The Soft Spot Under The Kneecap Which Makes It Impossible To Climb Stairs?

Question: An Ortho Differential - I'm having a problem with my left knee. I'm 77, 5ft 10in, 230lbs. So too heavy. The last six months or so, I cannot go up stairs or use a ladder without my left knee collapsing. It's limited to stairs and ladders. I do treadmill every morning, 1.67 miles brisk walking with an incline with no problem. My parking stall is at an incline and walking the incline does not lead to pain. Unique to stairs. I can generally take 4 steps before it hurts and collapses. I can go down without a problem. The pain is the soft spot under the knee cap. The pain does not continue when I stop stepping. No pain at any other times.

Brief Answer:
Can be decreased joint lubricants

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

The pain under the knee cap upon climbing stairs is likely to be due to a decrease in joint lubricants. These are basically age related degenerative changes in the weight bearing joints like the knee.

The treatment options include pain killers, hot fomentation, lubricating agents like Glucosamine Sulfate, Chondroitin, Dycerin etc., and some life style modifications and physiotherapy. You can also use an elastic knee support for help. Do start with proper supplements and avoid climbing stairs.

You can start with aerobic fitness exercises, quadriceps strengthening, patellar tapping, lateral heel wedges, et., under the guidance of your physiotherapist.

I hope this answers your query. Wishing you good health.
