Question: I've been doing laundry with a certain detergent for a long time with no reaction. I put on a pair of cutoffs washed in that detergent and whelps broke out all around my stomach and side. Itches like crazy. Question: Have I developed an allergy to the detergent, the fabric the pants are made of, or both???

Brief Answer:
Hives.

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you.
I am dr. kakkar (dermatologist and venereologist). I have noted your concern. You seem to have got Hives. Most likely those Hives are due to the detergent that was not washed off properly from the fabric.
I suggest you to take an oral antihistamine e.g tab. Cetrizine 10mg once a day for a few days.
In addition I suggest you to apply a soothing lotion e.g calamine lotion, 3-4 times a day.

Regards
