What Causes Whooshing Sound In Ear While Turning The Neck?

Posted on Thu, 10 Apr 2014
Question: Hello, I have a whooshing sound in my left ear. It's not constant but only when I turn my neck to the right ( max) or I bend forward ( then very short) like the sound whoosh.. Or it disappear when I go back to normal neck posture. When I wake up in the morning my ear ( sometimes ) feels pulled. It feels like it's worse when it's weekend and I don't work. ( I work as a sales man in office) It stops when I squeeze my scm muscle or I touch infront of bottom of the ear. ( of course when I trigger it ) It's now there for months and sometimes it's worse sometimes is better. I have been to ENT and provided hearing test and looked. so he said I have some hearing loss because of loud voices.. He said it might be the reason. But I don't believe it's that because it stops when I squeeze that muscle or touch that point. I also have been to physiotherapy and he said I have some muscle spasm. Is this the reason of my tinnitus you think ? I know there can be many other scary reasons but I mean why it does stop in cases I mentioned? I have made an MRI for brain and neck where no tumors or fluids or narrowing neck arteries were showed.

Brief Answer: seems to be due to tight neck muscles Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for your query. It all seems to be due to tight neck muscles. When the muscles are tight they can press onto the nerves for your ears to cause the sounds to be muffled . I suggest you to continue physiotherapy exercises to relieve the muscle spasm and strengthen the neck muscles. I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query. Take care

Just to be more clear to give you a much more clear picture: and Sorry to continue asking as this is driving me crazy every day for more than 6 months. The muffled sound you mentioned is like when you listen to an echo to a pregnant woman. Which means like blood flow but sometimes is also continues. It depends on how tight my SCM muscle is. I can modulate (alter) this sound by squeezing the scm muscle in several locations or just gently press under my ear. I'm hearing that also when look above and put my arms high. To be more clear, I can even modulate it by moving under jaw. Sometimes when I spasm the scm muscle the sound appears and goes away after 20 seconds. Sometimes it stays during this posture. But again, the sound only appears when: I trigger it by turning my neck to the right (to maximum which makes the scm muscle be visible). It also appears in the morning when I stand up just for short. It also appears when I bend over or make pressure. When I move my head from left to write quickly I hear it only once like Whoooooosh. I have been to chiropractor who told me to have little more tight left muscles than right. The physiotherapist told me the same. My neurologist sent me for the MRI I mentioned but they didnt find abnormalities. But the MRI was for head and neck veins and arteries. SO it was not for cervical spine. somebody told me it might be due to some osteophytes which can press on vascular structures. TO give you a short history about my lifestyle. I lost in the last 1.5 years about 10 kg and I sport like 4-5 days a week by jogging and gym. I have a feeling that it gets better when I sport or short after I sport. but I am not sure about this. I will try to attach a picture explaining how I reduce my whooshing. i hope I succeed. I had ENT consult and found slight hearing loss, TMJ specialist found nothing while my dentist found some clenching tooth traces, several GP's who couldn't relate this to something. I tried here to give you a complete clear picture. I hope you are able to understand my situation and symptoms from this long story and give me your opinion once again. Thanks for your attention doctor. Regards

By the way, I have no high blood pressure. No high cholesterol (which i had but it was reduced by sport). I feel good with no headaches, not dizzy.. Just feeling I'm in top condition. Last question, What makes you not thinking on A fistula? Too less symptoms? And because it's not continuesly?

Brief Answer: Description below. Detailed Answer: Hi, I am really sorry for late reply. I have gone through the image attached. It not seems to be due to A fistula. It all seems to be due to tight muscle. On turning your neck to right, scm muscle become more tense and tight . I suggest you to do not worry too much. Do physiotherapy exercises to relieve the spasm. Get yourself evaluated be ENT surgeon for slight hearing loss

Do not worry doctor. I really appreciate your answer. What about the one time whoooosh when I bed over? also due to a tight muscle? the hearing loss is evaluated already by the ETN. I have been to ETN, tmj and neurologist. the hearing loss is due to high music during the period I was working in a place with hard voice. Its on both ears on high frequenties. Thanks doctor for your answer.
