Posted on Sat, 17 May 2014
Question: I had my gallbladder removed a year ago and I am gaining so much weight even with eating carefully. I am also quite breathless at times. The weight seems to be mainly around my middle. I also get a stinging/pulling feeling in my right side. Any ideas...?

Greetings of the day

The weight gain occurring could be unrelated to the surgery.
I would suggest you to consider the following possiblity as the cause of possible weight increase
1. Post-Menopausal state: Woman who have attained menopause, its commonly seen to put on weight after surgery.
2. Hypothyroidism

Breathlessness could be due to putting on weight and associated exercise induced intolerance. Based on your age Cardiorepiratory causes also needs to be considered

I would suggest you the following investigation in consultation with your Physician
1. Complete blood count
2. 12 lead ECG and Echocardiography
3. Thyoid profile: Serum T3,T4 and TSH levels
4. Lipid profile.

In the meantime i would suggest you the following which will definitely help

1. Avoid high calorie food
2. Avoid spicy oily food
3. Brisk walking: 30 minutes at a stretch, al least once a day
