What Causes Weakness In Legs While On Prednisolone?

default
Posted on Thu, 28 Jan 2016
Question: I am at present taking a course of Prednisolone for inflammation which has shown up in a blood test and have noticed lately a feeling of weakness in the tops of my legs; wondering if this is a side effect. Thank you.
Note - My Doctor prescribed this medication after regular blood test which showed inflammation and high blood reading; the first course of this medication returned blood reading to normal; after stopping medication a further blood test again produced a high blood reading; I am now taking a second course of the medication.

Brief Answer:
prednisone may cause muscle wasting

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

one of the most common side effects of high prednisone dosages is muscle wasting (particularly the proximal muscles). This is probably what happened to you but prednisone may also cause other problems like electrolyte disorders (hypokalemia which may cause weakness) and psychological disorders which may mimic weakness.

You've not mentioned the diagnosis of this condition that required prednisone treatment. There are certain conditions which cause proximal muscle weakness, so this is another thing to consider. The treating doctor is the most appropriate person to decide that.

I hope you find my comments helpful!
