What Causes Vesicoureteral Reflux In A Child?
Question: We are looking for adoption and they have shown us a male kid and he is having below problem
the child is having III and IV grade vesicoureteric reflux and on treatment
Please let us know more on this as we are not aware what is this disease and how it will affect the kid?

Welcome to the HCM
The retrograde flow of urine from bladder into the ureters is known as vesicouretral reflux( VUR). It's graded as per increasing severity into 5 grades. Grade 3 and 4 are suggestive of reflux disease with associated dilatation of ureters and pelvis of kidneys.
Spontaneous resolution is common in young children and most cases improve by the age of 6 if well managed with antibiotics to avoid urinary tract infections(UTI). Goals of treatment are to prevent kidney infection ( pyelonephritis), reflux related renal injury and other complications of reflux.
In children who fail medical management (breakthrough UTI, persistent reflux) or those with high grades unlikely to resolve spontaneously, surgical therapy is indicated.
