What Causes Vertigo And High Blood Pressure?
Question: My father is feeling like vertigo while he is walking he is retired and not much physically active. from last two day we are measuring his BP which is between 147- 86 to 157/85.
Please suggest what is the reason for feeling vertigo and why BP are on higher side.
Suggest any test if required.

1. First ask him if he has unsteadiness or spinning (true vertigo).
2. Then check whether he gets the dizziness on change of position (lying down or getting up). Dizziness on change of position occurs in BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vetigo) and Cervical spine problems.
3. Ask if the dizziness is of short duration or long. Short duration spinning vertigo is more likely to be ear related. Get his ears and hearing checked.
4. Usually, ear related vertigo is less common while walking (except in a few conditions). Hence this seems to be related to his higher blood pressure readings. If he has eye symptoms (such as a blackout or blurring), this is more likely. Remember that the dizziness may persist for a few days even after the blood pressure is brought back to normal. Ask about headache.
5. Hence he should be examined by an ENT Specialist, A Neurologist (especially to rule out any stroke) and a General Medicine Specialist (Arthritis, asthma). Certain signs like Nystagmus (abnormal eye movements) can only be seen on direct examination.
