Hi

Thank you for asking HCM.

I have gone through your query. Gastric reflux if you have can make the ulcers worse. In such case you can take Nexium (esomeprazole) which is available as over the counter. This should be taken for 2 weeks.

You can do saline mouth wash and apply gels like Zytee RB gel which contains choline salicylate. Taking Vitamin B complex and vitamin C will be helpful also.

Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Mouth ulcers can be a side effect of celexa.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.

Thank you for your follow up.

You are right. Mouth ulcers are seen as side effects of celexa (citalopram). But the above mentioned measures and stopping of drug will help to recover from it. Celexa also can cause ulcers in gastro intestinal tract also.

Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.

A proper diagnostic work out will be needed.

Welcome again.

Thank you for your follow up.

In your case tongue ulcers are long standing. So any underlying condition should be ruled out also. A proper diagnostic work up by a physician is needed. There is possibility of immunosuppression from taking citalopram as such a correlation is reported.

Blood tests for iron deficiency anemia and B12 deficiency should be carried out.
Celiac disease, crohn's disease and viral infections like herpes should be ruled out.Herpes also can be ruled out by bloods test.

Problems causing immunodeficiency like HIV and Lupus should be ruled out. HIV blood test can be carried out and ANA profile in case of Lupus.
Continuous stress and anxiety also gives mouth ulcers. As you were taking anti depressant and stopped that there is possibility of that also. In such case change to another suitable drug will help.
.Chest X ray should be carried out to rule out PCP. If positive ,then it is a sign of immunodeficiency also. PCP will respond well to bactrim ds.

Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Explained below.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome again.

Thank you for your follow up.

Burning mouth syndrome is a diagnosis of exclusion. When no other causes are found this is put as diagnosis. It is reported only rarely in few people taking celexa. Actually antidepressants like celexa are used to treat burning mouth syndrome.

So in your case all other possible causes should be ruled out before putting that diagnosis. Treatment for such case is by anxiolytics , antidepressants or anticonvulsants.

Thanks.
