Question: Within the last two weeks me and my wife both have been having stomach problems, but we also have been having light brown stools that look like they have been ran over with a steam roller, is there a disease or virus causing this? Bloating, gas, mental irritability and the flat stools, sometimes blood streaks in the stools as well

Brief Answer: Rule out parasitic infection Detailed Answer: Dear XXXXXXX Thanks for the query. With such description of feces, as well as the clinical symptoms in which bloating should be one of the most prominent features, infection by the parasite Giardia Lamblia must be ruled out; another runner up would be the parasite Entamoeba. The best way to study for that would be with a stool sample for Ova and parasites, but also direct antigen tests for these pathogens are available. Hope that helps, wish you the best, Dr Brenes-Salazar MD Mayo Clinic MN
