What Causes Tiredness And Headache Post A Bout Of Diarrhea?

default
Posted on Sat, 31 Dec 2016
Question: I started diarreha Sunday. That lasted until Wed. On Thursday I seemed to be getting better, but I'm still so tired & my temperture now hovers around 94.4 - 95.2. I run a lower temperture a lot of the time, but not this low. I seem to be developing some cold type symptoms. I haven't taken Tylenol until I had a headache which isn't often. FYI: I had a 13 1/2 hour heart surgery 5 years ago where they replaced my mitral value, repaired my tri-cuspid and then my heart started separating in 2. My surgeon has done thousands of these surgeries & I'm only the 2nd patient that he saw this on. I can do anything I want usually, just no real stamina. I'm carefully watched by my primary care physican & cardilogist.

Brief Answer:
Dehydration and Electrolyte depletion are causing symptoms

Detailed Answer:
Hi Dear ,
Firstly thanks for choosing health care magic to ask your query!

Let me first give you a brief idea about why are you having your symptoms,

You had diarrhea on sunday which lasted for 3 days ,a prolonged bout of diarrhea or vomiting can cause the body to lose more fluid than it can take in. The result is dehydration, which occurs when your body doesn't have the fluid it needs to function properly; usually dehydration plays a major role in hypothermia .
If your blood volume is up to normal, your body can circulate enough fluid to your muscles and viscera to keep you functioning ,this circulating fluid is responsible for maintaining the temperature of body. As the blood volume decreases, as in diarrhea, a reflex is triggered that reduces the flow of blood to your hands and feet, arms and legs, even your ears and nose, letting them get further chilled to conserve heat . What little blood is flowing through the extremities becomes even more chilled, and even with the restricted flow, some of this blood mixes with that in your viscera and chills it even more

In a dehydrated person the volume of blood is less hence all organs don't get enough supply of blood ,hence temperature of body decreases.

Headache is also because of dehydration, during diarrhea body looses large amount of electrolyte in stools and vomiting , a imbalance between electrolytes like sodium ,potassium may trigger headache, and can cause easy fatiguability.

Feeling tired all the time is also because your body is depleted of important electrolytes, and you have not compensated for the lose of those electrolytes by taking extra elecrolytes in form of oral rehydration solution externally.

Your symptoms right now are not related to your cardiac problems. They are related to dehydration and electrolyte depletion caused by diarrhea.

As your age is 99 the effect of depletion of electrolyte is more pronounced in your case.

Advice
Drink plenty of water
Add electral ( electrolyte powder ) to water and drink as much as possible, this will immediately restore the depleted electrolytes.

If electral powder is not available add a pinch of salt & teaspoon of sugar to water water & drink.

Eat banana, pear.coconut water and orange juice they are very rich in potassium and will relieve your symptoms immediately.

As soon as your body get rehydrated and depleted electrolytes are restored again , all you symptoms like fatigue, tiredness, hypothermia and headache will go away.

Take light food as you are already taking ,keep salt in food on the higher side.
Probiotics should be taken for atleast 5 days to restore the gut flora again, once restored your appetite will return to normal again.
Digestive enzymes can also be taken for few days
You can consult your physician for the doses

If you have any other query ,feel free to ask me,i would be happy to help you!

Thank you

Thank you for all your information. I tried to correct the age, I guess it didn't go through. I'm 66 NOT 99. If this changes anything, let me know if it doesn't, which I suspect, no further reply is needed.

I realize age isn't usually isn't a factor, BUT 99? My advice would have been lay down & die, you've been on the planet too long. OK, maybe not, but...I had no idea dehydration was the problem, so I'll give you further info: I take a lot of pills ALL prescribed or approved by my doctor. I take Lasix twice daily with magnesium & potassium.
Should I stop the Lasix when I'm having diarreha & continue the Magnesium and potassium (he makes me take prescribed potassium, that huge pill that dissolves so easily) Should I take an extra potassium pill when I have those symptoms again?( I get my pills mail order-insurance requires it. I have enough potassium ahead for a long time)
FYI: Thanks, you're getting a glorious review from me.
One more, I've been told to drink ginger ale when stomach's upset, you said water. Is Unsweetened Koolaid OK? Could you give me a list of drinks OK when I have this problem again?

Brief Answer:
No dont stop lasix instead take a single tablet with spironolactone tablet

Detailed Answer:
Hi Again,

As you have got your valves repaired, i can not tell you to stop lasix tablet ,because as lasix is a diuretic it increases the excretion of excess fluid from the body; stoping lasix may cause volume overload which can lead to breathlessness.Hence if next time you have the same problem skip one dose of lasix .

Lasix is a very strong diuretic, muscle cramps, weakness, dizziness, spinning sensation, diarrhea, and dehydration are some common adverse effect of this drug.
It depletes the body of electrolyes like sodium, potassium, magnesium hence causes muscle fatigue and cramps.
As you have taken lasix in diarrhea your body is totally depleted of electrolytes and fluids;hence you are having symptoms like extreme fatigue..

For next three days i would advise you to take tablet spironolactone with lasix, its a potassium sparing diuretic ,and increases the level of potassium in body.(consult your physician for doses).

You can take extra potassium ,but recommended daily intake of external potassium for adults is 40-100 mEq per day, plus levels of potassium has to be monitored daily,as potassium can cause various types of arrythmias if the level increases in serum. So my suggestion is instead of taking pills ,go for natural potassium.
-Fruit juices such as prune, grape and apple juice as well as orange and tomato juice are rich in potassium. One cup of prune juice has 707 milligrams, 1/2 cup of orange juice has 236 milligrams, and a 6-ounce can of tomato juice 413 milligrams.
Coconut water is very rich in potassium and other electrolyte.
Beet Greens,Spinach , Swiss Chard,Mushrooms soups can be taken they are very rich in potassium.

Elecral /Enerzal powder is available in USA market ,it can be dissolved in water and can be taken(very effective)
UnsWeetened koolaid is ok ,add a pinch of common salt to it before drinking.

Ginger tea is a home remedy for loose motion, you can take it,but there is no substitute of water, water should be taken .

If you have any other question ,please feel free to ask,i would be happy to help you!
If you like my advice please do write a review !

Suggestion
..............
Never take a external supplement of potassium without monitoring its level in blood .,Even slightly elevated potassium level can lead to many life threatning arrythmias, however potassium from natural source can be taken unmonitored.
So always prefer to take natural potassium supplements.
