What Causes Tingling Sensation In The Lower Abdomen?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Jan 2017
Question: Hi,
For about the last 6-8 months have noticed occasional tingling sensation lower abdomen, but now it is creeping up to just under my sternum. I notice it off and on...it's not constant, but steadily more noticeable. No pain. I have been diagnosed with hemicrania continua on the right side of my face, which doesn't require treatment as the symptoms are mild, but it is a similar tingling feeling. The only other discomforts I have are osteoarthritis lower back, knees, hands and feet. Occasional NSAID use, heartburn, occasional Pepcid use, and daily BP med Losartan with Potassium and HCTZ. Ocassional stress incontinence but I'm an aging female who had a couple of kids!!. ..Any thoughts? I'm reluctant to go to my MD just yet as I'm not having any dysfunction and I not really in distress. Thank you! XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Read below

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

Whenever there is a complaint of an abnormal sensation such as tingling there is the suspicion of a neurological condition, either central in the brain and spinal cord or of the peripheral nerves. However judging from that description, the distribution of the tingling sensation, it is hard to connect that abnormal sensation to any particular brain or spinal area nor to an area covered by a particular nerve. So I would say it is unlikely to be related to a neurological disorder.

For that reason I would say that psychological factors must be taken into account. Anxiety is a common cause of tingling sensations. The fact that it comes and goes and less pronounced when you are busy with other activities would support the hypothesis of a psychological origin as well.

Whether it needs to be treated depends on how much it affects you, I would simply try relaxation techniques as long as it is not that bothering, would avoid unnecessary medication.

I remain at your disposal for other questions.
