What Causes Tingling And Numbness In Feet Despite Having Insulin For Diabetes?

default
Posted on Thu, 11 Dec 2014
Question: Hello,

I am type 1 diabetic. I ate last night without taking my fast acting insulin (Novolog) or long acting insulin (Lantus), and woke up with my feet and thighs tingling. I only feel the tingling sensation in my thighs when I touch them - feels as though they are numb. It is not painful, though slightly uncomfortable/weird. More so, I am worried this is a sign of nerve damage. Is nerve damage a possibility for me if I have been diabetic for 3 years?

My sugar was at 454 fasting. I took 8 units of Novolog to correct the high sugar and cover my breakfast. After eating, my sugar is now at 157 but I still feel the tingling/numbness. Please advise.

Brief Answer:
Nerve damage wont start in the thighs

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

The tingling and numbness is most commonly associated with very high blood sugars. It should settle down once your sugars are under good control. 454 is a very high value, I strongly recommend you to see an endoccrinologist for better control of your diabetes

I must add here that the nerve damage pattern seen in diabetes always starts at the peripheries that is in your feet first and then moves upwards. Nerve damage does not start in the thighs and that too all of a sudden

I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me

Just to be sure - it is possible at this point to treat/cure the tingling and numbness after better control of my blood sugar? I am nervous of damage that cannot be repaired.

Possible

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for getting back

Yes it is possible to control nerve damage through better control of blood sugars and good diet.
Tab Pregabalin is a good tablet for nerve related pain. I also recommend Tab Methycobalamin once daily for repairing and preventing nerve damage
