What Causes Tightness In The Throat After A Food Allergy?

default
Posted on Sat, 3 May 2014
Question: my daughter aged 18 years had an allergic reaction to eating snails; her throat and tongue swelled up and we had to go to A and E. Since then she continues to complain about a tightness in the throat which is more noticeable when she wakes up. she has started taking one allergy tablet when she wakes and this is helping. Any reason for the continuing tight throat?

Brief Answer: I need details about her hospital course. Detailed Answer: Dear Friend. Hi , I am Dr Anshul Varshney , I have read your query in detail , I understand your concern. Usually this tightness feeling is due to laryngeal spasm that occured. It might have occurred as a result of intubation if done. So, to give you a better reply i need further details: 1. When did this episode happened? 2. Was she intubated that time? 3. What treatment was given to her for this purpose? 4. Was she managed conservatively or any surgical intervention was done? This is my personal opinion based on details available here. Reply with these preferably point wise so that i can help you better. Stay Healthy. Dr Anshul Varshney , MD

Brief Answer: Nothing to be done. Detailed Answer: In this case, it might be a result of simply the spasm she had. Many a times, due to spasm, there is also some inflammation there, that takes a long to go. Also, i would advise to discuss with your doctor to add to her prescription a combination of Pantoprazole and domperidone, as sometimes esophageal reflux can also cause such sensation and irritation. Don't worry, that irritation will go with time. Nothing to be done for that at present. If you have any further query, please ask me, else you may please close the discussion and rate it. Stay Healthy.

What are Pantoprazole and domperidone? How will it help?

Brief Answer: Detail Follows. Detailed Answer: These medications are used for acting against acidity and reflux. A severe allergic reaction causes significant stress to the body causing acidity and reflux, that can also cause irritation in throat. So, it is advisable to add the combination in such patients.
