What Causes Tarlov Cyst?

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Dec 2016
Question: I had my coccyx removed in 1954. it was partially removed; during surgery they found a pyramidal cyst. They left the coccyx alone and worked on the cyst. (They felt the cause of my severe pain was the cyst) the cyst was draining for about 10 years. ) In 2010 they found a Tarlov cyst from an MRI. Could the tarlov cyst have caused the problems with the coccyx and pyramidal or visa-versa? This all occurred when I was in the USAF and I spent 3 month's in the hospital. I was still draining when I was discharged 3 years after surgery. I read somewhere that a partial removal of coccyx can have the same symptoms as an active tarlov cyst.
The important thing I am looking for is that is that the partial removal of coccyx has the same symptoms as the Tarlov.

Brief Answer:
The symptoms are different

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting the query.

I have gone through your medical history in detail and understand your concern.

In my opinion, tarlov cyst and its symptoms are pretty different from partial removal of coccyx.Local pain is the only similarity between the two conditions.

Tarlov cyst is a soft tissue swelling caused by accumulation of fluid inside the nerve root sheaths.
Symptoms due to these cysts are bound to be different from a bony lesion (partial removal of coccyx).

Unless the tarlov cyst is a huge one and causing pressure symptoms on the coccyx, the symptoms will definitely be different from each other.

I hope the answer was useful.

Feel free to ask me any doubts that you may have.

Thank you.

Kind regards.
