What Causes Symptoms Of Impetigo Reoccur Post Completion Of Antibiotics Course?

default
Posted on Mon, 28 Mar 2016
Question: 3 yr old son dx'd with Impetigo. He just finished a 10 day course of amoxicillin on Sunday. blisters / crust began to clear up within 3 - 4 days of starting oral antibiotic and ointment. As of this morning he has blisters beginning near the bottom of his mouth. We've begun to apply the ointment again. Does he need to see the doctor for a stronger course of antibiotics? Is it common for this to flare up right after finishing a course of antibiotics?

Doctor initially wanted to give him an antibiotic in the ceftin family but he had an adverse reaction to this in the past when he was given it for an ear infection. (He spiked a fever of 103 when he was 15 months old.)

Brief Answer:
Yes better to consult but don't worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
From your description it looks like a flareup of impetigo.
Kids tend to touch the affected area and then touch their mouth. This could have resulted in infection spreading to mouth.
I think you need to consult with your pediatrician again.
Ceftin group if allergic better to be avoided.
He might prescribe local antiseptics like fusidic acid to apply.
If severe may need a week more of amoxicillin.
Ensure your son washes his hands frequently.
Wishing your son speedy recovery.
Regards
Dr Arun
