What Causes Swollen Urethra And Stomach Pain In A Child?

default
Posted on Fri, 22 Aug 2014
Question: Hi, my 12 year old daughter has a swollen urethra and stomach pain, but she tested negative for a urinary tract infection twice.

Of special note, she often washes her hair in the bathtub and then sits in the shampoo water afterwards. Recently, she has been doing this often.

The problem started off and on 10 days ago and seemed to go away after the first negative UTI test. Now that we are away from home, it has worsened -- mainly causing a problem in the afternoon. In the last few days, she has had the urge to void, but nothing happens.

We are on vacation and can only get this thoroughly checked out when we are home on August 19th. What can we do until we get home? Should we ask a doctor for antibiotics? If so, what kind? Or is there an over the counter medicine we can try? We are moving around, but currently in XXXXXXX NC.

Thanks very much for your help!

Best regards,

XXXX

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mrs. XXXXXXX and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help.

I should rightfully start by stating that the most important thing right now is to confirm whether or not this is a urinary tract infection (UTI). This is important because if we do in fact initiate treatment for a UTI, and it is not a UTI then this will be considered blind treatment and may or may not help your daughter.

But if at all we are left with no options to analyze your daughter's urine at a clinic or hospitsl because you are travelling then we could initiate the following treatment. But please make note, that if at all she does not respond to these medications within a duration of 48 hours or develops any allergic reactions after taking any of these medications, then please discontinue them and either take her to a hospital immediately or write back to me.

1. Antibiotic: nitrofurantoin 100 mg, 1 capsule to be taken twice a day for 5 days
2. Di Sodium Hydrogen Citrate syrup (goes by various brand names like citralka, polycitra, potklor, alkaline citrate, etc.). One tablespoon to be mixed in a glass of water and taken three times a day for 5 days. This is important to help reduce the symptoms of a UTI
3. Drink plenty of water as the most serious complication of a UTI is dehydration
4. Keep the genitalia clean and dry. Also, as you are travelling and in a seated position for long durations of time, the bacteria are stagnant and can result in UTIs. So make sure you make frequent stops, and make sure she urinates in clesn toilets by squatting
5. Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda in a glass of water and give her twice a day
6. If available, purchase cranberry juice and allow her to take several sips as much as tolerated

Please keep close watch on your daughter during the first few hours of administration of these medications for any rashes, itching, cough, breathlessness, etc. These are symptoms of an allergic reaction and take her to a hospital. Hoping and praying it does not come to this and all goes well.

Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications ma'am. I would be more than happy to help you.

Best wishes.
