What Causes Swollen Painless Bump Near The Tip Of Tongue?

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Apr 2015
Question: I have had a swollen painless bump near the tip of my tongue for about four months or so. It started off a little painful like a swollen taste bud but never went away. I don't believe it's changed but it certainly hasn't gone away. I thought it was a benign condition but when I showed my dentist he referred me in for a biopsy. I called the doctor who does the biopsy and he won't make an appointment for me until late next week. Now I fear cancer. Should I go to the ER? Does this seem like a possible malignant condition that I should have taken care of quickly?

Brief Answer:
it does not seem like cancerous lesion

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX,

Thanks for consulting healthcaremagic.
This is Dr. Priyanka Tiwari answering your query .

Read your query and gone through reports (image) you have attached. As far as I have observed, it looks like fibroma. See what happened is continuous trauma to tongue from biting and chewing causes chronic irritation which result in formation of mass of connective tissue which is painless known as fibroma.

If you have habit of tongue biting then initial treatment involves breaking of tongue habit . For this I will suggest to firstly don't take stress, it is not cancerous lesion . Cancerous lesion has clinically rapid proliferative growth and indurated borders . But I recommend you to consult oral surgeon and go for investigation Biopsy to confirm the diagnosis next week . After confirming the diagnosis of fibroma, go for treatment .

Treatment of fibroma is complete surgical removal . This is painless procedure performed using lasers . Healing take 3 to 4 weeks .

Hope I have answered your query .
If you have further query I will be happy to help.

Hello Doctor,

I was able to get into the surgeon this morning, a week early. He is going to cut it out next week but arrived at the same conclusion at you. He doesn't think it's cancer and mentioned fibroma as well but is cutting it out to be extra safe. I appreciate the time you took to reply, it provided me a bit more reassurance the last couple of days.
