What Causes Swollen Black And Blue Area On Foot And Hands?

default
Posted on Tue, 19 Apr 2016
Question: Hi, I am concerned about my foot. I developed a swollen, black and blue area very quickly (in the past 24 hours) but did not injure my foot. The same type of discoloration and swelling in the same area happened a few months ago, but I disregarded it thinking I may have injured it unknowingly. Since I am certain now that this "bruising" is not from an injury, what else may it be? I have Reynauds in my hands and feet, but my feet are rarely affected compared to my hands which loose circulation almost daily during the winter. I do not have diabetes or any other diseases and am not overweight. I am 44, female, XXXX.

Brief Answer:
possibility of having varicose vein or deep vein thrombosis

Detailed Answer:
Hi, XXXXXXX
Thanks for posting query to HCM,
Read your history and understanding your concern.
From history it seems that there might be having some vascular insufficiency or breaking of capillaries producing minute hemorrhage on foot giving rise swelling, bruises, black and blue discoloration.
Raynaud's disease affects mainly fingers and toes and not foot.
This is possible if you are on some blood thinning medicine like Aspirin, warfarin for some other ailments.
Having varicose vein or deep vein thrombosis does give this problem.
As you do not have diabetes, possibility of having diabetic foot is no question.
In my opinion following measures are needed,
Go for prothrombine time and INR test and bleeding time, clotting time
Color Doppler to rule out deep vein thrombosis and varicose vein.
Check if you are taking any blood thinner medicine.
Consult physician and get examined.
Meanwhile raise your foot end. Put pillows below them
If require use Elastocrepe strokkings.
I hope, I answer your query.
If you have further query or clarification, please write back.
Wishing you speedy recovery.
